South Alton Plan

Land East of Selborne Road – Reserved Matters application for 243 houses.

This is the first of two RM applications under the the banner “South Alton Plan”.  Click  here  to see The Alton Society’s submission.

Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital – Reserved Matters application for 280 houses.  Ref: 30021/066.

We strongly objected to this second RM application to build 280 houses – the biggest development to hit us yet.  (Click here for our comments in full).  Whilst the developers had responded to some of the problems raised at the public consultation, there were many issues remaining, including:-

  • the potential desecration of the butterfly meadows,
  • the idea of a ‘country park’ (a nonsense in our view),
  • a deplorable lack of sustainable energy design, and
  • inadequate pedestrian links.

In the end, we were disappointed, though not surprised, that permission was granted for this huge  development (280 houses) at the EHDC Planning Committee on 26th June 2019, with no changes of any significance to the developer’s plans.  Alton’s two committee members were the only councillors to oppose the plans, with the remaining twelve voting in favour.  Ginny Boxall represented her concerns as local member (though not on the committee), and huge thanks to our secretary David Simpkins for representing the Society, as ‘objectors’.

Pedestrian Route around the Butts Bridge works

A temporary pedestrian route to Chawton has now been established, for the duration of the Butts Bridge works.   It is securely fenced off, and runs via the new Winchester Road link, then on towards the pedestrian subway under the A31.  (See below). We have asked for this important route to be properly signed.
